You learned five open chord shapes early on: C, A, G, E and D. CAGED is the observation that those five shapes, made moveable, tile the entire guitar neck — and that they always appear in the same order, spelling the word they are named after.
That is the whole system. Everything else is consequence.
Why five, and why that order
An octave has twelve frets, and each of the five shapes covers a window of about four. Five overlapping four-fret windows is roughly twelve frets, so the five shapes fit the octave exactly once and then start again.
The order is fixed because the shapes are fixed relative to each other. Take C major as the worked example. Its root sits at the eighth fret of the sixth string, and the five windows land like this:

Read the first column downward: C, A, G, E, D, and then round again. The open C, A, G, E and D chords you already play are the first appearance of each shape in their own keys — an open E chord is the E shape of E major at fret 0.

What the ringed notes are for
Each shape is a chord shape, and inside every scale position there is a triad hiding — the three notes of the underlying major chord. Those are the ones ringed on the diagram.
This is the practical payoff of CAGED, and it is worth stating plainly: the ringed notes are where a phrase can stop. Land on one and the line sounds resolved. Land on any other scale note and the line sounds like it is still going somewhere. Knowing which is which, in every position, without thinking, is most of what separates a player who knows scales from a player who can use them.
Minor keys borrow
A minor key uses its relative major’s shapes. A minor is played over C major’s CAGED layout, because they are the same seven notes with a different home.
The tool does this for you — pick a minor scale and the readout names the shape and tells you which major it came from. It is not a shortcut or an approximation; it is what the relationship actually is.
What CAGED is not
It is not a scale system. CAGED tells you where the chords are. The scale positions wrap around them, which is why the two line up but do not coincide — see the five pentatonic positions for the other view of the same neck.
It does not transfer to other instruments. CAGED is built on six-string standard tuning’s specific interval pattern. A bass is four strings in straight fourths; a ukulele is four strings with a reentrant G; a cavaquinho is tuned D G B D. None of them preserves what CAGED depends on, which is why those pages have no Position control rather than a system invented for them.
It does not survive drop tunings cleanly either. In drop D the sixth string is a D, but players still finger CAGED shapes relative to standard positions, so neither answer is quite right.
How to practise it
Take one chord — say G major — and play it as all five shapes up the neck, in order, naming each one out loud. Then do it with the scale wrapped around each shape. The goal is not to memorise five diagrams; it is to stop seeing the neck as twenty-four frets and start seeing it as five rooms you already know the furniture in.
A capo is the fastest way to feel this. Put it on, keep your fingers in one shape, and hear the same fingering become a different key.
