What this is
A free reference tool for looking up musical scales on fretted instruments. There is nothing to buy here, nothing to sign up for, and no account to create. Using the site means accepting the terms on this page.
No warranty
The site is provided as it is, without any warranty. The theory it implements is standard and it has been checked carefully — but it is software, software has bugs, and a diagram here is not a substitute for your own ears.
Nothing on this site is professional advice of any kind, and {{AUTHOR_NAME}} is not liable for any loss arising from using it or from being unable to use it.
If you find something wrong, please say so. Corrections to the music, the terminology or the translations are welcome on the contact page.
The material
The music theory itself belongs to nobody. Pitch-class arithmetic, the CAGED system, letter-step spelling — none of it is anyone’s property, and you should feel free to learn it, teach it and implement it yourself.
The written articles, the wording of the interface and the design of this site are © {{AUTHOR_NAME}}. Quote them with attribution; do not republish them wholesale.
Diagrams produced by the tool are yours to use — screenshot them, print them, put them in your students’ handouts. That is what it is for.
Fair use of the site
The site is static and cheap to serve, so there is no rate limit and no gatekeeping. Please do not scrape it aggressively enough to cost the host money, and do not present it as your own work.
The one exception is the contact form, which is rate limited and sits behind a bot check. Both are there because a form with neither becomes somebody else’s mail relay within a week. Use it to write to me, not to send anything to anyone else.
